The Hidden Price of Delay: Why Immigration Reform Can’t Wait

Immigration Reform
Immigration Reform Delay

For years, immigration reform has hovered on America’s policy agenda—debated, dissected, and ultimately deferred. But while politicians stall, the cost of inaction keeps rising.

As a former mayor of a border city in Arizona and later as Director of the Arizona Department of Commerce, I’ve seen how immigration impacts everything from economic growth to social cohesion. My time leading U.S. Customs and Border Protection further deepened my understanding of the system’s human consequences. Now, as CEO of Intermestic Partners—an international business advisory firm founded in 2011 that specializes in cross-border trade and development—I work daily with companies navigating the immigration challenges our policies have failed to solve.

What’s at Stake?

Immigration reform isn’t just a policy issue—it’s a national imperative. And every delay comes with a cost:

💰 Economic Loss

  • Skilled workers remain stuck in limbo, unable to contribute fully to innovation or entrepreneurship

  • Labor shortages grow in industries like agriculture, healthcare, and tech

  • Immigrants contribute billions in taxes and consumer spending, but outdated policies limit their potential

🧠 Social and Emotional Toll

  • Families wait years, even decades, in uncertainty

  • Mental health suffers under constant stress and fear of separation

  • Immigrants feel alienated, unable to fully integrate without legal clarity

⚖️ Public Safety and Human Rights

  • Undocumented immigrants are vulnerable to abuse in work and housing

  • Lack of legal status deters cooperation with law enforcement

  • Exploitation goes unchecked, undermining justice and fairness

🌍 Lessons from Abroad

Canada, Germany, and Australia have all shown that well-designed immigration policies—such as points-based or skills-prioritized systems—can attract talent, fill labor gaps, and strengthen economies.

So why does the U.S.—a nation built by immigrants—remain stuck?

A Way Forward

Comprehensive reform must include:

  • Border security measures that are effective, not extreme

  • A fair pathway to citizenship

  • Modernized legal immigration processes

  • Strong protections for worker and human rights

And none of it can happen without public engagement.

The Role of Business and Community

At Intermestic Partners, we work with national and international firms that want to invest in people—whether through employment, education, or cross-border collaboration. These companies are held back not by economic conditions, but by outdated immigration policy.
