Understanding Dual Roots
In a globalized world, more people than ever identify with two nations or cultures. This binational identity—whether through birth, migration, or heritage—offers both opportunities and challenges.
Having lived and worked across borders as a former mayor of an Arizona border city, Director of the Arizona Department of Commerce, and Chief of Staff at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, I’ve seen firsthand how identity shapes belonging.
Today, as CEO of Intermestic Partners, an international business advisory firm founded in 2011 that specializes in cross-border trade and development, I see binational understanding as a strength in business, diplomacy, and community building.
The Value of Two Worlds
Celebrating a dual identity builds confidence and perspective. It teaches adaptability, empathy, and innovation—qualities essential in leadership and global collaboration. Famous examples, such as Naomi Osaka, show how bicultural heritage can expand influence and inspire others.
Research shows that bicultural individuals often outperform peers in problem-solving and creativity because they learn to see issues through multiple cultural lenses.
Living and Celebrating Both Sides
From Día de los Muertos to Thanksgiving, or blending languages and cuisines at home, celebrating a binational identity is deeply personal. Each ritual or practice reminds us that our heritage doesn’t compete—it completes.
Overcoming Barriers
While embracing two cultures enriches life, it can also create tension. Some feel pressure to “choose” one identity or face misunderstanding. Finding community and drawing strength from shared experiences helps turn these challenges into empowerment.
Society can support this by promoting inclusive education, fair representation, and anti-discrimination laws such as the Dual Nationality Act.
A Call to Celebrate Diversity
Recognizing binational identity is more than personal, it’s transformative. It pushes nations, companies, and individuals to see connection over difference. At Intermestic Partners, we believe the bridges between cultures are where the greatest innovation happens.
If you share this experience or work in a cross-border environment, I invite you to reflect on your story. Every voice adds depth to our shared understanding of what it means to belong to more than one world.
Call to Action: Let’s celebrate the richness of binational identity together. Connect with Intermestic Partners to explore how cultural diversity fuels collaboration, leadership, and growth.
