The U.S. revoked the visa of a former Mexican president's son. Here is what that does, and does not, mean.
On August 13, Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, published a letter to President Trump announcing that his U.S. visa had been canceled. He named Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau, called the decision political, and said no evidence exists against him. Aristegui Noticias published the full letter.
He is not the first. More than fifty Mexican political figures have lost U.S. visas since 2025, including governors and border mayors.
I served as chief of staff at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, so let me say two things that are both true.
Entry into the United States is a privilege tied to conduct. It is not an inheritance. That assumption is being dismantled, and I do not mourn it.
And a revoked visa is not a criminal charge. No indictment. No hearing. Under the doctrine of consular nonreviewability, U.S. courts almost never review these decisions, and most people never learn the specific ground.
So there is no appeal. What exists is narrower: request the ineligibility ground in writing, reapply and build a new record, seek a waiver where the ground permits one, pursue a national interest exception, and correct errors at the source.
López Beltrán has a platform, a campaign, and a president to write to. The shop owner in El Paso does not. She gets a canceled appointment and no explanation.
The authority behind most corruption based visa bans does not live in immigration law at all. It sits in Section 7031(c) of an annual appropriations bill, which means Congress renews this power every single year.
Strong enforcement and clear process are not opposites.
