A Demographic That Can Decide Elections
Few forces in American politics are growing faster—or becoming more decisive—than Latino voters. As we move through 2025 under President Trump’s return, the focus already shifts toward the 2026 midterms and 2028 general elections. The Latino vote isn’t just a statistic—it’s a reckoning.
As CEO of Intermestic Partners—an international business advisory firm I founded in 2011 that specializes in cross-border trade and development—I’ve worked across industries and borders. My journey from border-city mayor to Director of the Arizona Department of Commerce and Chief of Staff at U.S. Customs and Border Protection reflects the unique intersection where policy, migration, and identity collide.
The Rise of Latino Political Power
Latino voter participation has surged since 2008, when their community helped tip the scales for President Obama. In 2020, about 32 million Latinos were eligible to vote, making them the largest ethnic minority electorate in U.S. history. As we look ahead to 2026, their influence continues to expand.
Latino voters now make up over 30% of the electorate in California and more than 20% in Nevada and Florida—states that will be crucial in shaping the 2026 political landscape.
What Latino Voters Want
Issues like healthcare, the economy, education, immigration, and gun policy consistently rank highest. Yet Latino voters are not monolithic—their diverse origins and socioeconomic backgrounds demand nuanced policy platforms and authentic engagement.
Generic outreach won’t cut it. Latino voters expect respect, specific solutions, and meaningful inclusion—not stereotypes or platitudes.
Why 2026 Matters
Parties are already gearing up for 2026—and beyond—with increased outreach to Latino communities through targeted messaging, bilingual campaigns, and grassroots mobilization.
If campaigns tap into this demographic’s aspirations—family stability, economic opportunity, humane migration—it could shift outcomes at state and federal levels.
